Roulette and Craps are probably the two casino games with the longest pedigree. It is assumed that dice were first used as a type of incantation to find out what the gods had in store for people’s fate. This probably happened five thousand (or more) years ago. Should the army attack the village on the other side of the valley? Roll the bones – yes, sheep bones or human bones substituted for the dice – and then they would find out what they should do.
Roulette worked somewhat the same way, except that the soldiers used their shields instead of the dice, and the rotation of the shield determined the fate of the next battle or war. It is thought that some of the soldiers, drugged or drunk, in horrible wine tastings, would spin on their shields. One is not sure if this is true, but one never knows.
Note: Were these instruments used for gambling, like today, or were they just for fun? There are descriptions in ancient literature, of soldiers and civilians using such instruments in war, peace and play. People have been playing for fun since the beginning of gambling history.
Roulette was the first true casino game and was probably introduced into the customs of the Middle Ages. The nobles tried to win at Roulette with various gambling systems and strategies. If we had a time machine, we could go back and show them that the systems they invented and used, while fun, could not give them a true mathematical advantage over Casino. Fortunately, peasants didn’t play in casinos because they were so poor.
So, what were some of the most famous systems used by our ancestors in an attempt to beat the wheel? Are some of these still used today when people are learning to play Roulette? We can easily answer these two questions: Yes! The systems of the past are still in use today. Why? Because they are fun to play and structure a player’s plan in a way that makes sense to him. A player always knows what to do next when playing with a system. There is no guesswork about how or what to do next.
We will describe some old strategies and some new ones. This will require a few articles, but be patient and you may find that one or two of these systems will work for you.
So here we go, on a journey into the most inspired, enjoyable and sometimes exciting ways to play Roulette. In the next part of the article we will explain two simple strategies that can help you structure your plays. These are two of the oldest game systems.
